Description

Indigenous people are the least healthy sub-population in Australia. Research shows that due to socio-economic indicators and limitations in accessing primary health care services and health infrastructure, rates of ill health in indigenous Australians are significantly higher than those of non-indigenous Australians. The difference in life expectancy is at times even 17 years.

By signing the ‘Close the Gap’ statement of intent in 2008, the Australian government and the leading indigenous health and mainstream health peak bodies, have agreed to work together on achieving equality in health status and life expectancy between indigenous and non-indigenous Australians by 2030.

This two-day masterclass will provide you with an opportunity to interact with the masterclass leaders and exchange knowledge and experiences with other attendees. You will gain a better understanding of how to improve indigenous health outcomes and you’ll be armed with techniques to:

  • Quantify the level of healthcare and resources needed to improve of the health of indigenous communities
  • Ensure political commitment for securing resources
  • Drive indigenous healthcare policy and program change
  • Turn research and policy into action
  • Build meaningful partnerships with other stakeholders
  • Improve the accessibility of health services for indigenous people
  • Consult, collaborate and engage with indigenous communities on health
  • Develop, train and geographically distribute the indigenous health workforce
